Wellness in Interior Design

What does it mean to design with wellness in mind?

Designing with wellness in mind involves what building materials and lighting we select along with how we integrate the outdoor-indoor space through Biophilic design and greenery incorporation as well as delivering healthy air quality. Designing with wellness in mind is not going to go out of style because it will constantly be changing to meet the needs of the users, and at the end of the day every individual wants to feel good.

Β This is what we want to strive for going into 2023!

The ideas of what wellness means have changed over the course of the last two years due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Now more than ever in the design world we are seeing just how important wellness in interior design is and what we can do to help create a better home environment.Β

Materials like cork, bamboo, and rattan are all eco-friendly resources that can be used in interior spaces for flooring, furniture, and rugs selections to support renewable resource use.

A term called Biophilic Design is something we’ve been hearing about in the last couple of years, this means incorporating green spaces within the interior environment that promotes oxygen as well as bring the feelings of nature indoors. This can be achieved by simply adding live greenery into our spaces or creating greenery walls as seen above for a feature design element while being sustainable.Β

Nano walls are a great solution to making the indoors feel like they are a part of the outdoors. These are foldable glass doors that when closed create a seamless picture-perfect view to your backyard but when opened there is full access to the outdoors. We have seen this application done in both commercial and residential designs.

Lighting has become one of the main focuses of wellness in design as it plays a very important role in our mood. Adjustable color temperature lighting is where we are seeing the most applications of wellness-inspired lighting designs. Using LED lights ranging from 2700-3300 Kelvin for warm lighting to 3300-5300 Kelvin for cool lighting and daylight falls around 6500 Kelvin. This idea of lighting temperature variation gives the user the choice to set the lighting around their home to their preference.Β

Sick building syndrome (SBS) is something we are learning more and more about due to the harmful practices of building construction of the past. SBS is enhanced by air pollution, off-gassing from material selections, and poor indoor ventilation systems. We also must be aware of Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs). VOCs come from carbon dioxide, carbon monoxide, tobacco smoke, mold, radon, as well as chemical off-gassing. They can be found in common products like paint and paint thinners, hairspray, and cleaning products. When we are specifying building materials, we want to steer clear of paints, finishes, adhesives, fire retardant furniture and fabrics that contain VOCs to help stop off-gassing. In a more commercial setting, you want to look for buildings that have certifications like LEED, BREEAM, and WELL. This signifies that the building was constructed with non-toxic building materials and maintains a healthy ventilation system for purifying the air from pollutants. Double, even triple checking that a building is safe to begin construction and possesses no concern for SBS is the first step in designing with wellness in mind. Once all other applications of a project are complete it is important to continue to keep up with good air quality control by changing out your air filters and keeping those beautiful plants alive!Β

Transitioning to Fall Decor

Fall is almost upon us, and as we are transitioning into the new season we have some fast and simple ideas to help reshape your space. Among the many spaces in your home, some that are quite simple to decorate include the coffee table, living sofa, dining table, and mantle. Getting ready for the holidays seems to spark creativity and a need to fill all the nooks and crannies in your home adding a festive touch to the space.Β

On the coffee table, accessories like; faux pumpkins and acorns, as well as candles that smell like pumpkin pie or apple cider really fill the room with the feeling of fall. An arrangement of faux sunflowers and warm-toned leaves can make the perfect centerpiece for any table. Furthermore, your mantle is also an easy place to set some Autumn decor. It can be sprinkled with some leafy garland, twinkle lights, pine cones, cotton stems, or even some classic candles making the space feel cozy.

Whenever you are decorating you should always go back to that rule of thumb “less is more.” It’s also important to consider the types of accessories we choose for a space and the material they are made from. We recommend spending the extra dollar on a few good items rather than a bunch of pieces that don’t necessarily give that wow factor. Sometimes certain decorations can seem overused or tacky, but hopefully, with this inspiration, you can take away ideas on how to get your home ready for those upcoming holiday family gatherings.Β

Inspired by the warm tones of the season’s leaves, an assortment of throw pillows in the same colorway was chosen along with a throw blanket.

Let’s not forget that famous pumpkin pillow. We always need one of those!

Don’t feel pressured to stick to the typical orange, red, and yellow tones to style for fall. Layering neutrals such as whites, off-whites, and browns are just as beautiful and eye-catching. Β Add a touch of greenery here and there and you’ll be set! Faux eucalyptus or sage are great choices for that.Β

Β

This dining table setting steers away from the usual and is not covered in pumpkins like we tend to see quite often. Instead, it uses greenery as its focal point draped along the center of the table. Depth is added through a layering of neutrals with subtle shades of yellow, red, and green. Still expressing an autumn vibe without being so literal.

Β This striking mantle design showcases candles, faux flowers, greenery, wooden pumpkins, and fabric-wrapped pumpkins. This decor choice complements the minimalist design approach creating visual interest without being too overbearing. Something to think about here is the addition of the framed mirror. This is a great approach to consider in absence of a television or piece of artwork.Β

Β

This simple dΓ©cor shows visual symmetry without using the same type of object. Don’t be afraid to change things up on either side of a focal point, both asymmetry and symmetry are important in any space and can be represented through visual weight. Here a larger vase in glass on one side balances with a pairing of three smaller wooden candelabrums on the other.

The above image is also a great reminder for us to always design from floor to ceiling. Include all surfaces of your home even your floor!Β  A wicker basket with a pillow and throw blanket add a lived-in look that is inviting and cozy for the cooler weather to come. Fall is the perfect time to break out all those additions especially anything that is plaid patterned.Β

We hope you consider all these decor ideas and FALL into the season’s spirit!
