Trend Wagon | Fall 2013

In lieu of the upcoming design topic at #IntDesignerChat, Fall Trends 2013, we have decided to put together some of the design trends we are seeing emerge for this fall season! As designers, we typically shy away from the word “trend” – therefore, in this feature…we “trend” lightly!!

First up….

Quilted Furniture

We are seeing more and more furniture designers paying homage to this 1970’s trend. | Q u i l t e d | patchwork or “sweater” upholstering is becoming a popular treatment being used to | u p d a t e| mid-century chair and sofa frames. We could probably |c r e a t e | a whole space from the inspiration of this one chair we found on Pinterest.

| F e a t h e r s | have been making their way upfront and center in the fashion scene for the past couple seasons. However, we are starting to see this untamed | t e x t u r e | creep into furniture design and we are saying YES, PLEASE!! Check out our blog post |d e v o t e d | to our love for feathers HERE!

Animal Print

Like feathers, | a n i m a l | p r i n t | has been a reoccurring designer-go-to way to add interest and | i n t r i g u e | into any space. We like to add one element of animal print into any space, even it is as subtle as a tone on tone alligator print or even a touch ostrich leather. When it comes to animal print, did you know the difference between |c h e e t a h|, leopard and jaguar? If so, then you should be able to recognize that the print above is actually that of an ocelot!! Take a look at our post about differentiating the various | f e l i n e | prints HERE!

Bold hues have taken 2013 by storm!!!! And we couldn’t be | m o r e | pleased! Years ago we used to tell our clients, “Life is too short to live in a beige room!!” Well, we are happy to have our clients coming to us with a | y e a r n i n g | for color, pattern and a little FUNK!!

Calligraphy and Handsketching

This will be | b i g | this season!

Farm meets City

Objects will be displayed in clear boxes for the outside world to view!! | T h i n k | g r e e n | walls and rooftops with livestock!! This is truly a trend with some |s t a y i  n g|  power!! Hopefully it will be a snowball effect for a global movement!!! Have a read about our love of living walls HERE.

And lastly…

Everything About This Room

Literally, we love everything about this space. The wallpaper, the | c e i l i n g p a p e r | , the rug, the quilted sofa, all of it. We are loving this new adventurous take on mixing patterns. By taking a simple variegated stripe and pairing it with a chevron ceiling treatment, | i n s t a n t | visual interest is achieved. Now, we understand that this | m i g h t | not be everyone’s cup of tea, but what we can agree on is how the mixture of textures and finishes can take a room from Safe Sally | t o | Designer Debbie in a snap!

Last week we stumbled upon this great blog by Rena Tom, Eye Candy No. 19: Feathers and it got us thinking, if feathers can be used for inspiration in art then what other possibilities do they have?! We have seen the fashion world using feathers for inspiration for a while as well.  You can see below the metal feathers are becoming very popular in jewelry.  Amber herself wears a feather bracelet which represents a special bond between her and her sister.

As designers we are always thinking about ways to connect design style and fashion to bring an evolutionary design to your homes. We found this beautiful wallpaper below at Walls Design Shop and it’s even called Feathers.

Just recently we used this great fabric from Fabricut called Modern Eyelash and it not only incorporates the colors found in feathers it also gives you the texture.

And if you are just looking to bring in a little touch of the feathers to your space then rugs and pillows are great ways to easily tie in the this look and idea in a less permanent way.  Here are a just a few that we came across in our travels.
