How To Prepare Your Home For Fall

With each new season comes change. With the approach of fall, the leaves turn colors, the air turns crisp, and flips flops are exchanged for boots and scarves. There are football games on Saturdays, pumpkin lattes in the morning, and bonfires at night. Our temperatures haven’t changed yet, but surely they will soon! Temperatures, activities, and wardrobes aren’t the only things that need to change a bit for fall. Our homes also need to adjust and be prepared for the new season. It’s that time to change up some decor items and gather all back to school supplies. It’s also the time to prepare your home’s exterior and front landscaping for the impending cooler temperatures! If you are eager to embrace the new season, here are a few ways you can prepare your home for fall.

Bring out the blankets.

You packed up your blankets and cozy throws for spring and summer, but it’s time to bring them back out. Keep a few blankets readily available for family and guests in a nearby basket or tuck them into a storage ottoman for quick access.

Heat up the hearth.

Fall is perfect for sitting around the fireplace with the family. So before you light your first fire, be sure to freshen your hearth. Throw away your old hearth tools you’ve had for a decade and bring in new ones along with a new fire screen to complement it. It’s also important to have your chimney inspected before you use it again for the first time. Creosote buildup could start a fire in your chimney and could pose a danger to you and your family. Find a reputable company to inspect your chimney!

Spruce up your bedding.

Those cool and crisp nights are around the corner, so it’s time to adjust your bedding. Add a duvet or a coverlet for extra warmth or a blanket to go over the sheets. A quilted coverlet is an excellent option because they have a cotton fill that provides the extra warmth needed on those cold nights. Additional accent pillows also offer something to snuggle up with.

Refresh your landscaping.

Before it gets too cold, be sure to trim up your outdoor landscaping. Trim those shrubs and bushes around your front porch and along your front walkways to create a more inviting entrance. Now is the time to also do your fall plantings. It’s always a good idea to plant new trees and shrubs to keep your yard interesting. The weather is cool, and the soil is still warm enough for roots to thrive. You can also plant certain flowers, like pansies, to add additional color to your landscaping. If you have a garden, it’s time to plant your cool season vegetables like broccoli, cabbage, lettuce, and spinach, so they have enough time to mature before winter comes.

Prepare your doors and windows.

With spring and part of summer, your windows and doors might have spent a good amount of time open letting the fresh warm air in. Before the cold sweeps in, be sure to check your doors and windows to make sure they are sealed properly to prevent cold air from creeping into your home. For windows, caulk and sealants are options for sealing and insulating. Weather-stripping your doors is a quick and easy way to prevent unnecessary drafts from entering.

We hope you found this helpful in order to prepare your home for the upcoming months! Stay cozy and stay warm!

Switch out your light, summer-y decorative pillows for warmer colors to give it a cozy, fall feel. While you’re at it, switch out the curtains, blankets, and throws as well! These are wonderful ways to show off your fall colors and a unique, seasonal personality.

You have the airy, fresh bedroom that summer called for including white sheets and light coming in from every angle. Now, it’s time to bring in the neutral, warmer colors. Replace the crisp linens for cozier and comfier fabrics. This is by far the easiest way to progress along with the seasons. Change up the throw blanket, and you will have a wonderfully different effect.

Decorate with Nature

Fall is all about the leaves changing and pumpkin patches. Utilize these nature changes in your home decor! Place sticks and branches around them, or, if you’d like, you can put them together in bowls or vases giving it more of an organized outdoorsy look. If branches and sticks aren’t really your thing, use seasonal fruit! The best fall fruits to decorate with are apples and pears. They are clear indications of the fall season. To spice up your décor even more, add candles, gourds, and nuts, and to give this a fancier effect, you can spray paint the decorations metallic and neutral colors, such as cream and gold.

The Candle Tray

The candle tray is a great décor idea that helps a room feel warm and comfortable. Collect a group of candles of all different sizes and heights and place them on a tray that adds to the room you are currently decorating. The fun thing about this is you can change it up at any point in time, and it will always look great. Throw on some iron lanterns to give it a darker touch.

Dining Room Décor
