Cleaning Products That Are Harmful To The Home
Spring cleaning is here, and in the midst of your spring cleaning, we have some secrets for you that need to be passed around!! There are some cleaning products and solutions that are extremely dangerous to your homes! We will let you know which types, what to look for, and what a good alternative would be.
Greenwashing
The first category of cleaning products we need to look into is greenwashing products. These are products that say safe, non-toxic, and green, but they tend to be anything but. Many of these products can damage red blood cells, irritate eyes, cause permanent damage, cause severe burns, and may even be fatal! When you are at the store picking up cleaning supplies, read the labels very carefully and pay attention to warnings. Some of these products are labeled poison, danger, or fatal if swallowed or inhaled. Those are the ones you should definitely stay away from. Most greenwashing cleaners are all-purpose cleaners, so to create a natural replacement, mix 2 cups of water, one half cup of white vinegar, 1 teaspoon of dish soap, and 1 teaspoon of baking powder. This will do the trick!
Multi-Surface
Multi-surface products can be very dangerous to the hormone cycle, odd enough. Many of these products contain nonylphenol ethoxylate, which is the cause of this damage. Instead of going to the store and buying a multi-surface cleaner, you can make one easily and naturally at home! In a spray bottle, combine 1 cup of distilled water, 1 cup of vinegar, 20 drops of lemon essential oil, and 20 drops of tea tree essential oil. These essential oils help clean and remove odors and grime, and they achieve that perfected clean home smell.
Shower Foam & Bathroom Cleaner
You don’t want to be cleaning your home with dangerous chemicals and especially not your bathroom! Many bathroom cleaners can irritate and inflame the lungs, so when you want some from the store, read the label and stay away from the products that have butoxydigyuol in them. This is the main ingredient that makes them harmful to your family. It is so easy to make homemade shower and bathroom cleaner, though, so we encourage everyone to use your already in-home house products. Mix 2 cups of vinegar and 2 tablespoons of Dawn. It will perform miracles in your bathroom!
Stain Remover
Stain removers are very tricky. First of all, most of them don’t work, and second of all, you welcoming harmful chemicals into the air you breathe. The chemical placed in stain removers are just generally bad for your body. Read the back label and look for 2-butoxyethanol. This chemical becomes very hazardous when breathed in. How about, instead, you mix one part Dawn dish soap with 2 parts hydrogen peroxide? It’s way more effective and less dangerous!
Oven Cleaner
The last product we’re going to mention is oven cleaner. Oven cleaner can be one of the most deceiving when it comes to cleaning products, because among many reasons, some labels will suggest opening windows and doors for fresh air when they claim to be fume-free. These products can also cause burning of the skin, lungs, and eyes. We suggest not using a store-bought oven cleaner at all. Instead, try covering the bottom of your oven in baking soda and spray with water. Wait 8 hours and then, scrape and wipe away until it is all clean. Do this to ensure you are cleaning your oven the safest and most responsible way.
Granted these steps will help you achieve a safer home, there are many more home supplies that are dangerous and harmful. The biggest tip we have for you is to read all labels, and if there is a chemical you are unaware of, research it to be safe. The best way to go about cleaning your home, though, is to personally make all natural products especially if you have children and pets living in the home. So Safe. So Simple. So Clean!
